More cores is a good improvement, but just going to 4 will be a modest one. Track transform is a great solution, but can be limiting your creativity / mood. Especially if you don't have really short (impossible) deadlines.
That's not a bad plan, and is a valid way for you to continue to work. It seemed that by the time I would add a virtual drum kit and 3 or 4 more virtual instruments, it would start to give me issues and I would transform to audio to get freed up. On the old machine, I would run out of horsepower before I would run out of memory. I first tried to do small upgrades to my computer with limited success. I went from a 6-core 2.8 Ghz AMD with 8 GB RAM so I was in the same boat and made some mistakes along the way.
